DEDICATED 100% TO THE GLOBAL TANK STORAGE INDUSTRY

APM Terminals and Hapag-Lloyd partner to drive future growth at Maasvlakte II

Hapag-Lloyd has signed an agreement with APM Terminals to acquire a 25 percent stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II B.V. The partnership is intended to support the terminal’s continued development, capacity expansion and operational performance, while reinforcing the importance of Maasvlakte II as a key European hub for the Gemini Cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and A.P. Moller – Maersk.

Through the transaction, Hapag-Lloyd will secure long-term automated terminal handling capacity and further strengthen its global terminal portfolio through its Terminals and Infrastructure division, Hanseatic Global Terminals. APM Terminals will retain operational control of Maasvlakte II.

Dheeraj Bhatia, CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals and Executive Board Member of Hapag-Lloyd AG, said the investment would further improve the efficiency and reliability of Hapag-Lloyd’s network. He added that the terminal is a key element of the Gemini Cooperation and aligns with the company’s strategy of building a stronger terminal portfolio in core markets.

APM Terminals CEO Keith Svendsen said Hapag-Lloyd’s investment demonstrates confidence in Maasvlakte II and its importance to both the Gemini network and the Port of Rotterdam. He said the partnership reflects the companies’ shared commitment to the terminal’s long-term development and performance.

Svendsen also highlighted the ongoing expansion of Maasvlakte II, which is being delivered in collaboration with the terminal team, works council and Port of Rotterdam Authority. The objective is to establish the facility as a leading terminal in Northern Europe, with a focus on safety, quality, delivery and cost, while increasing deep-sea berth and container capacity to support future customer growth.

Operational since 2015, APM Terminals Maasvlakte II is currently undergoing a major expansion designed to strengthen its role as a key European gateway. The project includes an additional 1,000 metres of deep-sea berth, increasing the total berth length to 2,000 metres, as well as expanded yard capacity, four additional rail tracks and the deployment of Automated Terminal Tractors (ATTs) and other automated equipment.

Following the expansion, the terminal is expected to reach an annual handling capacity of up to 5.4 million TEU. The increased capacity is intended to enhance Maasvlakte II’s operational resilience and enable it to accommodate future cargo flows through Rotterdam.

The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. Completion remains subject to approval from the relevant authorities and regulators.
